There are a handful of things going on around town I’d like to get to…eventually. But I want to take my time and I haven’t had much of that lately.

For now I’ll make another record of some of the nice flowers in and around the yard.

The bank building at the corner of Sheldon and Ann Arbor Road was razed today.  It has been leveled to make way for a Kroger gas station. Since I’ve worked in Plymouth, the building has been home to Plymouth’s branch of Michigan National Bank, Standard Federal, Lasalle Bank and, finally, Bank of America.  I liked that location as it is near my office and I am otherwise frequently in the area.  I guess we now know the building will not be put to another use.

In short, the company lied to its customers here in Plymouth.  If you know (or care), back at the first of the year, Bally Total Fitness was bought out by L. A. Fitness.  The Plymouth Bally is an older facility, but it has lots of long-time members — people that joined Vic Tanny back in the 70’s still go to this gym.  I’ve been a Vic Tanny/Bally/L. A. Fitness member since 1994.

After the acquisition, members, not surprisingly, wanted to know the fate of the Plymouth location.  Everyone I overheard talking about this or spoke with at the time and since, was told the same thing as me: the former Plymouth Bally/current Plymouth L. A. Fitness location on Ann Arbor Road, east of Haggerty, would remain open until the new Plymouth-Canton area location was constructed and move-in ready.  In my case, I specifically demanded to know whether the Plymouth location would stay open, both in conversations with the local employees and with someone at corporate.  I was told the old Bally would stay open until the new place was built.  If I hadn’t been told that, I wouldn’t have renewed my membership in April, as I have no interest in making a 15 mile roundtrip to go to the gym — my current commute is 3 miles.

I’m sure the kids that told us this stuff had no way of knowing anything other than that, but it turns out that wasn’t true.  L. A. Fitness flat-out lied (and that company can go screw itself if it thinks this comment is libelous.  I know what I was told.)  Today I found out that the current Plymouth location will close on June 29.  The announcement was only made two days ago.  Now, our memberships are being honored at other locations, but the nearest is Plymouth Road and Middlebelt in Livonia.  Sorry, but I didn’t renew my membership so that I could spend more time of my day in the car.

It’s really disgusting.  An employee of the current location told me today that he was never told that the company was going to close the location anytime soon and, in fact, recently sold memberships on the understanding that the Plymouth facility would remain open indefinitely.  He actually expressed “guilt” for having sold those memberships.

L. A. Fitness did us dirty, I think.  But I dropped a few hundred bucks for a membership.  I don’t know whether to find a law firm that will handle a class action suit or just go to the facility in Livonia.  Just know that this is how that company does business in our community.
